Garlic has considerable potential for preventing Cardiomyopathy, a form of heart disease that is one of the leading causes of death in diabetic patients, a new study revealed.
The report, which appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, explains that people with diabetes have twice the risk of death from heart disease in comparison with others, as heart disease accounts for 80 percent of all diabetes-related deaths.
People with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to a form of heart disease termed diabetic cardiomyopathy, which leads to inflammation and weakening of the hearts muscle tissue.
Wei-Wen Kuo and team, who carried out a study, said that garlic has the ability to protect against heart disease in general, while also helping to control the abnormally high blood sugar levels.
The scientists fed either garlic oil or corn oil to laboratory rats with diabetes. The animals given garlic oil, showed considerable changes in protection against heart damage. These could possibly be due to the potent antioxidant properties of garlic oil, as more than 20 substances have been identified in garlic oil, which could contribute to this effect, the scientists said.
On the whole, garlic oil holds immense potential for protecting hearts from diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy, the report concludes.
