January can be a difficult month. The days (in the northern hemisphere at least) are still short and often gloomy, most people are feeling the pinch financially and we are generally trying to lose weight, eat healthily, drink less alcohol, give up smoking, do more exercise..etc etc…
New Year can be a welcome time of new beginnings but if we are to stick to our resolutions and acheive our goals we need motivation and will power. Changing habits for good takes persistence and dedication.
Aromatherapy can help. There are several essential oils that can be used alone or in blends in a variety of application to raise energy, aid determination and lift the spirits.
Empowering, opening herbal and camphoraceous oils which bring clarity, a sense of positivity and a desire for change are called for. Blend with a hint of spice for energy, the strength of wood for stamina and a cheerful note of revitalising orange.
Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis) is a wonderful oil that helps raise energy, clear the mind, invigorate the spirit and aids a feeling of self confidence. A few drops on a tissue or in a morning bath will help get you going in the morning!
Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) is a hot, stimulating oil that warms Kidney Yang and boosts the whole system when we feel tired, cold, lethargic and achy. Ginger will pick you up if you feel apathetic and in need of help to get motivated.
Ginger is a strong oil so use in moderation.
People with sensitive skin may find ginger irritating. Make sure it is well diluted in a base oil or gel before use.
Thyme: There are many different varieties of Thyme. I would recommend Thymus vulgaris ct linalool for the home user as it is effective without being too strong.
Thyme is very fortifying. It has a strong antibacterial action and aids immune strength as well as tonifying most of the body’s systems. It is renowned for bringing courageand drive where it is lacking. A very good oil if you are feeling weak or run down and this is affectng your motivation.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and its familiar decongestant aroma helps open and clear the mind as well as the sinuses. It can dispel melancholy and help people feel more positive and less constricted and sluggish.
Juniper (Juniperus communis) is a very cleansing oil – just what we need after the excesses of the holiday period. It helps disperse toxins that may be bogging us down and also disperses negativity. It helps our will power through dispelling stagnation.
Juniper in a room spritzer or a mood-changing spritzer always brings a feeling of positive change in the atmosphere; particularly so when combined with Sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia)
Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) is a very strengthening oil. Whilst many of the herbal oils help ignite motivation and energy the woody Cedar helps stabilise the person, bring stamina and aid’s will power. Like the oils already mentioned Cedar is a general tonic but as a steadying influence it works really wellin any blend for motivation.
Orange (Citrus sinensis) is not in itself an oil for motivation but as a warm citrus oil it belnds well with the warming herbal, camphoraceous, woody and spice oils and brings a sweetness to the blend. Orange is very much a positive oil and work well to bring a cheerful and sunny feeling to whoever uses it.
